Embedding YouTube Videos

It used to be possible to embed You Tube videos so that they played in the forum, but now they show an image and if anyone clicks it they are taken off the forum and over to YouTube.  (It seems to work here, which is super weird.)

I tried to show this video by posting this link (I tried the Share link too):-

But this is what the link was parsed as on our site - a nofollow link that takes visitors off the site.

<a rel="nofollow" href=""><img src="https://img.youtube.com/vi/1mLxxxOMcs8/0.jpg" width="640" height="385" alt="image" style="border: 0px;"></a>
<img src="https://img.youtube.com/vi/1mLxxxOMcs8/0.jpg" width="640" height="385" alt="image" style="border: 0px;">

Am I missing something?

    Hey there,

We're aware of this issue and we're working toward a solution.  We're hoping to have it resolved as soon as possible.

Thank you.  My students reported a problem with embedding photos too, and I had a thought: I recently switched on security, and when I switch it off, embedding works.  It doesn't seem to fix the YouTube issue though.

I thought I had added the correct "safe" sites, but it doesn't seem to matter whether the site is in this list or not, the warning crops up if you click on a link to a safe site, or the embedding stops anyway.  I have switched it off for now.

    I hope this helps.

    Hey Lynne,

The developers pushed an update out last night that should resolve the issue with Youtube and other social media aspects not embedding.  Please test it out and let us know if you're still having a problem!  Thanks!

Yay! Thanks it's working.  (What did you mean about "other social media aspects"?  Are we able to embed other things? <span>:open_mouth:</span>

    Hey Lynne,

There are a couple other things that will automatically embed if you post the right link (Twitter and Youtube are probably the most popular).  You can find a good listing here:  https://blog.vanillaforums.com/features/automatic-embeds-twitter-instagram-pinterest-youtube-vimeo/

Let me know if you have any questions!
  • Hmm. I've tried Pinterest with this link:-

    But it doesn't appear:

When I try the German link (I live in Germany), just the link appears.

  • Ah - ignore me, it just took a while.  Thanks.  I'll have fun with this.  (The German link still doesn't work though.)

I believe support for international pinterest URLs will need to be added, I'll file this with the developers.

    Thanks!
