User settings missing

The drop down menu in the upper right of a user's profile screen has disappeared so our users are no longer able to get into their settings and change their username, etc. Where did this function go?

  • Your members role does not have the settings > view or personal info > view permissions. I would recommend experimenting with those permissions to find the level you feel is appropriate for your members, they are powerful permissions

  • But until about a week or so ago, the users were able to change their forum
    names. Now that ability does not exist. We have made no recent changes to
    our roles or permissions at all.

    And we don't want them to be able to view each other's personal info, just
    their own, such as email, username, and gender, etc.

  • Let me check for you that nothing has changed recently.

  • So I see what you're talking about with the "member" users set to not see
    personal info. We did change that a while back so that definitely could be
    the issue and we just didn't notice the user settings disappearing until
    recently.

    The reason we made this change is that we created a user role that we
    didn't want everyone to see. Unchecking the personal info box is the only
    way I am aware of that allows us to do so. Is there another way that we can
    not display a role for all to see, but still allow users to view and change
    their own information?

    I just messed around with the "view personal info" in member permissions. When I checked the box, the roles we want hidden did appear, but the drop down menu to change user settings still was absent. So it doesn't look like that's the cause.

    Are you sure that you all haven't made any changes, to your theme or otherwise? When I am spoofed into a user, I can still get to the settings by going directly to http://writersdomain.vanillaforums.com/profile/edit, When logged in as an administrator, the drop down is there, but the sprite appears to be off. I would check through your theme and make sure the element isn't being hidden, or perhaps add profile/edit to your top menu.

  • We made one change almost two months ago when we disabled the ability for
    the "member" role to "view' personal info. I have re-enabled this action a
    couple different times to see if that was the issue and the drop down menu
    still does not appear. I definitely know that we have not messed with the
    template in any way. Our developers are very hands off and haven't touched
    the template since we first launched the forum.

    Can you explain what you mean with adding the profile/edit to our top menu?

    Ah, Did you recently turn on your SSO? Your registration is set to connect, which disables profile editing automatically as it is then handled on your end. You enabled username editing, but it seems to not override the SSO setting currently. The quickest workaround I can implement is turning on either the location or title field for users, would that be alright?

  • We did not recently turn on SSO. Basically the entire setup for the forum
    has remained unchanged since it was first set up this summer.

    What does it mean to turn on location or title field?

    It would give the users a blank field where they could enter a title or a location, which overrides the sso settings to remove profile editing completely. I would also recommend, if SSO is your only method of connecting users, that you set it to your default sign in method in the JSconnect settings. You also have "This connection is in test-mode." selected which makes jsconnect ignore signatures, since you have SSO running live, you that unchecked so you aren't vulnerable.

    our developers to check on the questions you're asking and then we'll see
